"Can't connect" troubleshooting

TL;DR

Most connection failures are a version mismatch or a typo'd IP — check those first against the website, then confirm the server is online and your own internet/firewall before assuming the server is down.

Can’t get in? Don’t panic — connection problems almost always come down to one of a handful of causes, and most are quick fixes on your end. Work through this checklist in order, because it’s sorted by how common each cause is. You’ll usually be back in within a couple of minutes.

1. Version mismatch (most common)

If you see “Outdated client,” “Outdated server,” or a red connection bar, your Minecraft version doesn’t match the server’s.

  • Fix: Check the required version on playharvestseason.com (the /play or /status page), then switch your launcher to that exact version.
  • This is the #1 cause of connection failures, especially after a Minecraft update auto-bumps your client.
  • Full instructions: Fixing “outdated client/server” errors.

2. Wrong or typo’d IP

A single wrong character means you won’t reach the server.

  • Fix: Delete the server entry and re-add it, copy-pasting the IP straight from the website rather than typing it. Watch for trailing spaces, O vs 0, and l vs 1.
  • Make sure you didn’t accidentally include http:// or a port you don’t need — paste exactly what the website shows.
  • See How to connect for the add-server steps.

3. You’re on the wrong edition

HarvestSeason is Java Edition only.

  • Fix: Confirm you’re using Minecraft Java Edition on a PC. Bedrock Edition (the Windows 10/11 app, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, iOS, Android) cannot connect — there’s no workaround; it’s a different game.

4. Your account isn’t allowed (online mode)

The server runs in online mode and verifies every account with Mojang/Microsoft.

  • Fix: Use a genuine (premium) Minecraft account. Cracked/offline launchers are rejected.
  • If you see an authentication error, fully restart the launcher to refresh your login session, or sign out and back in.

5. The server is offline or in maintenance

Sometimes it really is the server — for a restart, update, or season reset.

  • Fix: Check the /status page on the website. It shows live online status and any maintenance banner.
  • If it says offline or maintenance, there’s nothing to fix on your end — wait and try again shortly. Season resets and updates are usually announced in Discord.

6. Your own internet connection

If other sites/games are also failing, the problem is local.

  • Fix: Confirm other websites load. Restart your router (unplug 30 seconds, plug back in).
  • Try a wired ethernet connection if Wi-Fi is flaky — it’s more reliable and lower-latency. See Reducing ping & latency.

7. Firewall or antivirus blocking Minecraft

Security software can silently block the game’s connection.

  • Fix: Allow Java / javaw.exe through Windows Defender Firewall (Settings → Privacy & security → Windows Security → Firewall & network protection → Allow an app).
  • Temporarily disable third-party antivirus to test; if that fixes it, add a Minecraft exception and re-enable it.
  • On a school, work, or dorm network, the firewall may block game servers entirely — there’s often nothing you can change on those networks.

8. DNS or “Unknown host” errors

“Unknown host” or “Can’t resolve hostname” means your PC can’t translate the address into a server.

  • Fix: Switch your DNS to a public resolver — Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or Google (8.8.8.8) — in your network adapter settings.
  • Flush your DNS cache: open Command Prompt and run ipconfig /flushdns, then restart Minecraft.

9. VPN or proxy interference

  • Fix: If you use a VPN or proxy, try turning it off — some are blocked or add routing problems. If you’re on a restrictive network and a VPN is the only way out, choose a server region close to you.

Still stuck?

If you’ve worked through everything above and still can’t connect, ask in Discord. When you do, include: your Minecraft version, the exact error message, and whether the /status page shows the server online. That lets staff and other players help you fast.

FAQ

Why can't I connect even though the server is online?

The most common reason is a version mismatch — your client doesn't match the server's required version. Check the website for the current version and switch your launcher to it.

How do I know if the server is actually down?

Check the /status page on the website. It shows live online status and any maintenance banner. If it says offline or maintenance, the issue is on the server side and you just need to wait.

I'm on Bedrock and can't connect — why?

HarvestSeason is Java Edition only. Bedrock (the Windows app, consoles, and mobile) cannot connect at all. You need Minecraft Java Edition on a PC.

The IP looks right but it still fails — what now?

Re-copy the IP from the website with no extra spaces, restart your game and router, and try again. Persistent failures after that point to firewall, DNS, or ISP issues covered below.
