Fixing "outdated client/server" errors
"Outdated client" means you're behind the server and "outdated server" means you're ahead — both are fixed by setting your Minecraft to the exact version the website lists, which you can do in the vanilla launcher, Prism, or Lunar.
The “outdated client” / “outdated server” error is the single most common reason people can’t join, and it’s also one of the easiest to fix. It simply means your Minecraft version and the server’s version don’t match. This guide explains why it happens and walks through switching versions in the three most common launchers.
Why the error happens
Minecraft servers run a specific version, and your client has to speak the same protocol to connect. There’s no backward or forward compatibility between most versions:
- “Outdated client” — your Minecraft is older than the server. You need to update.
- “Outdated server” — your Minecraft is newer than the server. You need to switch down to the server’s version (this is just as common, usually because a Minecraft update auto-bumped your client).
HarvestSeason runs a modern Paper version. When Mojang releases a new Minecraft version, your launcher may quietly update you to it — and suddenly you’re “ahead” of the server and can’t connect until the server updates or you switch back. So the rule is simple: match the server’s exact version.
Step 1: Find the required version
Always check the website — it’s the source of truth and stays current:
- Go to playharvestseason.com.
- Open /play or /status.
- Read the required Minecraft version (a specific modern version number).
Write it down exactly. Now switch your client to it.
Step 2: Switch versions
Pick the section for your launcher.
Official (vanilla) Minecraft Launcher
- Open the launcher and go to the Installations tab.
- Click New installation.
- Give it a name like
HarvestSeason, and pick the required version from the Version dropdown.- If the version isn’t listed, tick “Show all versions / releases” (and make sure the launcher itself is up to date).
- Click Create, then Play on that installation.
Tip: keep a dedicated HarvestSeason installation so you can always launch the right version in one click, even after Minecraft updates.
Prism Launcher (and similar, e.g. MultiMC)
- Click Add Instance.
- Choose Vanilla and select the required version from the list.
- Name it
HarvestSeasonand click OK. - Select the instance and click Launch.
Prism is great for this because each instance is locked to its version — Minecraft updates can’t break it, and you can add allowed performance mods (Fabric + Sodium) per instance.
Lunar Client
- Open the Lunar launcher.
- On the main screen, use the version selector to pick the required version.
- Click Launch.
Lunar bundles performance optimizations and is fully allowed — see Allowed vs banned mods.
Step 3: Reconnect
Once you’re on the matching version:
- Go to Multiplayer.
- The HarvestSeason entry should now show a green connection bar.
- Join. If it still fails, re-check that the version number matches exactly — even a minor version difference can block you.
Matching the version exactly
A few things trip people up:
- Match the full version, not just the major one. The server may require a specific point release; a near-miss can still be rejected.
- Snapshots don’t count. A snapshot or pre-release won’t connect to a release-version server.
- Mod loaders don’t change the protocol. A Fabric or Forge install on the right version still connects fine — performance mods are allowed and don’t affect compatibility. Just make sure the underlying Minecraft version is correct.
After a Minecraft update
When a new Minecraft version drops, your launcher may switch you to it automatically and you’ll suddenly get an “outdated server” error. This is normal and expected:
- Don’t panic — the server hasn’t broken.
- Switch back to the required version using the steps above (a locked installation/instance makes this a one-click fix).
- The server will update to newer versions on its own schedule; until it does, you stay on the listed version. Updates are usually announced in Discord.

FAQ
What does "outdated client" mean?
Your Minecraft version is older than the server's. Update your client to the version the website lists. "Outdated server" is the opposite — your client is newer — and the fix is the same: switch your client to match the server exactly.
Where do I find the required version?
On the website at playharvestseason.com — the /play or /status page shows the current required version. The server runs a modern Paper version and your client must match it.
Can a newer client connect to an older server?
Generally no. Minecraft requires your client version to match the server's protocol. Being newer ("outdated server" error) fails just like being older. Match the exact version.
How do I add an old or specific version in the launcher?
In the official launcher, create a New installation and pick the version from the dropdown. In Prism, add a new instance with that version. In Lunar, choose the version on the launcher's main screen.
