High refresh-rate & competitive settings
Uncap your frame rate (or cap it just above your refresh rate), enable raw mouse input, turn VSync off, and run a performance mod so your inputs land instantly — smooth, responsive, and faster harvesting.
If your hardware can handle it, a smooth high-refresh setup makes long harvest sessions feel effortless — crisp camera movement, instant inputs, and no stutter. None of this is pay-to-win or against the rules; it’s just making your client feel responsive. Here’s how to set it up properly.
Match your monitor’s refresh rate
First, know your numbers. Most monitors are 60Hz; gaming panels run 120Hz, 144Hz, 165Hz or 240Hz. Your FPS should meet or exceed your refresh rate to feel fully smooth.
- Confirm your refresh rate is actually set. On Windows: Settings → Display → Advanced display, and set the refresh rate to its highest value. Laptops sometimes default to 60Hz even on a 144Hz panel.
- Set your in-game FPS limit. In Options → Video Settings → Max Framerate:
- For lowest input lag, set the cap a little above your refresh rate — e.g. 160 on a 144Hz monitor, 75 on a 60Hz monitor.
- “Unlimited” also works but burns extra power and generates heat for no visible gain past your panel’s limit.
| Monitor | Recommended FPS cap |
|---|---|
| 60Hz | 70–75 |
| 120Hz | 130–144 |
| 144Hz | 160 |
| 240Hz | 250+ or Unlimited |
VSync: usually off
VSync locks your FPS to your refresh rate to eliminate screen tearing, but it adds input lag. For a responsive feel:
- Turn VSync OFF and use an in-game FPS cap instead.
- If you see tearing and it bothers you, the better fix is G-Sync (Nvidia) or FreeSync (AMD) enabled in your GPU control panel and monitor menu — that gives you tear-free frames without the input lag of VSync.
Enable raw input
Raw mouse input bypasses Windows pointer acceleration so your aim and camera are perfectly 1:1.
- In Options → Controls → Mouse Settings, enable Raw Input (OptiFine and Sodium label this clearly).
- In Windows mouse settings, turn off “Enhance pointer precision” (that’s mouse acceleration) for consistent movement everywhere.
- Set your mouse polling rate to 1000Hz in its software if it supports it.
Cut input lag at the source
Input lag is the delay between clicking and seeing the result. To minimize it:
- Run a performance mod. Sodium/OptiFine raise FPS, and higher FPS directly lowers input lag. See Running on a low-end PC for the mod list — they help fast machines too.
- VSync off (above).
- Cap FPS above refresh rather than unlimited — paradoxically, an uncapped frame rate can add latency from a full render queue on some systems.
- Disable fullscreen optimizations for
javaw.exe/java.exein Windows, or run exclusive fullscreen if your client offers it. - GPU control panel: set Low Latency Mode (Nvidia) to On/Ultra, or Anti-Lag (AMD) on.
Settings competitive farmers prefer
Beyond the basics, these are common choices for fast, comfortable harvesting:
- FOV: 80–90. A slightly wider field of view lets you see more of your field at once. Personal preference — try a few.
- Render distance: 8–12. Enough to see your whole island plus a buffer, without wasting frames.
- Attack Indicator: Off or Crosshair. Reduces visual clutter while sweeping.
- GUI Scale: 2 or Auto. Big enough to read your sidebar/score without squinting.
- View Bobbing: Off. Many players find it distracting and slightly nauseating during long sessions; off gives a steadier view of the crops you’re breaking.
- Brightness: Bright. Easier to spot ready crops; pair with ready-crop highlighting from the Harvester Tool menu.
- Distortion / FOV effects: 0%. Removes the speed-distortion and nausea warp for a stable picture.
A note on perspective
High refresh rate is genuinely nice, but it’s not a competitive requirement. HarvestSeason rewards consistent hand-harvesting and smart use of the Featured crop and AoE sweep — not reaction time. A focused player on a stable 60Hz machine will out-farm a distracted one on 240Hz every time. Tune your setup so it feels good, then go grow crops.
What’s next
Pair your smooth setup with efficient keybinds for fast farming, and make sure every mod you run is on the allowed list.
FAQ
Should I cap or uncap my FPS?
For lowest input lag, cap your FPS slightly above your monitor's refresh rate (e.g. 160 on a 144Hz panel) rather than fully unlimited. Unlimited works too but wastes power and adds heat for no visible benefit.
Do I need a 144Hz monitor to compete?
No. HarvestSeason is hand-harvesting, not a twitch shooter. A high refresh rate feels nicer but won't out-farm a focused player on 60Hz. Smoothness and consistency matter more than raw numbers.
What's raw input and should I turn it on?
Raw input reads your mouse directly, ignoring Windows pointer acceleration, so movement is 1:1 and predictable. Turn it on — it's in Options → Controls → Mouse Settings (Sodium/OptiFine expose it clearly).
Will high FPS get me banned?
No. Uncapping FPS and tuning video settings are completely allowed. Only cheat clients, autoclickers/macros and x-ray are banned. See Allowed vs banned mods.
